A European Commission study run on 3,207 agri-food products, wines and spirit drinks under Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), Geographical Indications (GI) and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG), found that the sales value of a product with a protected name is on average double that for similar products without a certification, proving that these “IP rights” offer economic benefit to producers in terms of marketing and increase of sales. Italian products such as Asti, Chianti, Chianti Classico, Conegliano, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Prosecco, Grana Padano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, are no exception.
